My Friend, Fancy

This humble poem is dedicated to my dearest flatmate, Fancy. She's my MSN, Plurk, Facebook, Friendster, hanging-out, anything-goes kind of buddy. (We can do all those all at the same time, next to each other too). So, it's time for me to do something "nice" to her.

*Evil laughter*

Here we go ...

My Friend, Fancy

Her name is Fancy
Her nick is Panci
Her beau is Franky
Her car is Suzuki

Her mind’s quite blurry
But she ain’t a dummy
She thinks she’s groovy
We think she’s "clownie"

Her blood is AB
Her jokes are crappy
Her life is funny
But never lonely

That’s my friend Fancy
Who is quite lovely
Even though she's silly
Still a GREAT company

Story of A Sign

What a beautiful super short film (only 5 minutes) that portrays how words that are written differently will strike different feelings on others.

So, What Do You See?

Recently I have too many wake-up calls through unexpected sources. TV shows, newsletter, stupid activities, etc. Most of the words of wisdom I've posted at my quotes blog, including this following quote that I'm going to share with you.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for. --John Lubbock

Simple words, aren't they? But ponder deeply upon them. They are too profound and too true. And its simplicity has been taken for granted by so many and in this following context, by me.

I think this particular quote should be on everyone's head all the time. It should be a great reminder to our breathing moments to focus on what we want to look for.

Yes, I still have my starstruck moment and I think that incident itself will not recover so fast on me. You may think it's just another celebrity, yes she is. Diana Krall is a human too but ... what I found interesting in this incident is what my friend was looking for. From the first day we mentioned about the concert, she saw nothing but her signed CDs. She talked and acted as if Diana Krall was going to sign her CDs. And looked at what we've got? Not only the autographs but we MET, TALKED, and ARE in a photo together.

What my friend saw all along was the signed CDs but the universe has rewarded her persistence in perspective with a chance to interact and simply be present with the star. And I was just happened to be under the radar coverage that silly and skeptic me had the chance to tap on her gift from the universe.

Back to the message - what we see depends mainly on what we look for. From now, try instill the habit of asking yourself in the mind ... "At this moment, what am I looking for?". For example, how many times you found yourself doing things for the sake of doing without knowing why you are doing it. You simply take the activity as a chore. But if you have a specific "thing" to look for, you may be surprised with what you found. If you are in a meeting and what you are looking for subconsciously is a piece of boredom, then no surprise that's how you'd feel. If you think you'll find a new friend in that meeting, naturally, you will find a new friend there.

From now on, let's set in our mind's eyes that we only want to look for things that we want to. Don't accept anything lesser than that, unless, that's what you are looking for. You won't know what you'll get, you may just get what you wish for and more. :-)

I Met Diana Krall

I thought the title is just my hallucination but it's not. It's REAL and I still can't believe it happened. I, this small little monkey from Singapore, managed to meet the Grammy winning jazz vocalist Diana Krall. Yes! Grammy winning! It's on par with Academy Awards of the music industry. I'm in temporary heaven.

The journey in getting to know Diana Krall's music was a pure serendipity. It was 1999, I was still a student and I was walking around in a local bookstore which happened to sell CDs too. Then I went to the jazz section and discovered the following cover.

I didn't know who she was and what kind of songs she sang. I was not sure if she was famous then too. But well, I took a chance on it. The cover was nice and the box was pretty unique (for that era). And I've never regretted since. I'm a fan who collected most of her albums.

That album has accompanied most of my university time. When the hostel was empty as it was the holiday season, I blasted her voice throughout and chilled in the dark. It was so heavenly. The best album one can ever own. I then evangelized how great her album was and now vividly reminded by 2 of my friends that I was the one who introduced her works to them.

So now, 2008, 9 years later, one of my friend asked whether I'd like to watch her concert. The ticket was pricey. But heck, it's for Diana Krall so we all went ahead. The 2 friends that I happened to introduce her music too, were the ones who shared this special moment with me.

One of my friend in particular was so obsessed with the whole concert that she has made a mission for herself that was to get all her CDs signed by Diana Krall. Honestly, I was so amused by her ambition that I teased her all the time. I only brought one of my CD as I seriously didn't think it's going to be possible. (My friend brought 3 and a brand new black marker pen).

The concert was awesome even though it was really too short and the F1 racing cars' noise affected the mood a little bit, but overall, it was a splendid experience. After the concert was over, my misson-oriented-friend quickly ran off to the stage with her heels in the muddy terrain. She didn't care. She has been plotting ways to talk to the security personnels the whole day and was really ready to do whatever it took for all her CDs to be signed. Another friend and I just followed, and seriously I was still a skeptic then.

Finally, we were in front of the stage, standing with a bunch of people with VIP pass. I thought, hmm... things are looking good here, we may just have the chance to meet her in person. So, I was not at all worried. I was busy playing with the camera. But my
misson-oriented-friend was still panicky as it's uncertain we're able to go through since we are not VIPs! But the bouncer was really nice enough to arrange us into one line and let us in after the VIPs were done with their businesses. (When I mentioned VIPs, one of them were a group of Canadian ambassadors!!! We were just right behind them ...)

Then, I saw her ... OMG! It's Diana Krall. She was busy catching up with the VIPs. Diana Krall was just so close to me ... I mean it! She's so so so so close that ... I started to react like a papparazzi. And yes, I'm the only un-civilized monkey doing such things. (I was so surprised but I didn't think my friends were at all)

And then she was approaching. It's our turn. Even though Mr. Bouncer said she didn't want to give any autographs but HEY! She's so friendly and she signed every single thing that we gave her! She's so down to earth and approachable even though she's not at the very best of her health, she got cold. (And as she was signing stuff ... you guess it right, I was still playing my role as papparazzi). I have some proofs of my ugly photos taken. :p

Then ... the ultimate moment ... she agreed to take photo with all of us ... let me tell you, nothing can beat that feeling. Everybody was in the moment of absolute high. I am still "high" even the event has been over 2 days ago. I'm sickly starstruck!

So she signed all the CDs... with my friend's marker (I thought it's my marker but she said mine was almost out of ink and she didn't want to risk it! Geez...)

and she sang beautifully with great song choices ...

but ultimately ... the most priceless moment of all was that my friends and I have captured the whole experience in a photo.

Ticket: $196
Dinner: $18.20
Photo with Diana Krall: Priceless
My silly grin: Erm ... no comment

Lesson learned ... I'll never laugh at my friend's silly ambition again as you seriously won't know what the universe has in store for you. I am so glad things happened the way it was and I was able to spend the special moments with my dearest friends.

Thank you everyone! It's been S'wonderful! And enjoy the S'wonderful song below. (For those of you who couldn't view the video in the email, you may click the following link: http://www.donnadaritan.com/2008/09/i-met-diana-krall.html)

Online Shopping

A few weeks ago I read in the newspaper that online businesses are blooming in Singapore, especially in the area of fashion and accessories. Lots of people, especially women, are following their passion for fashion and monetize it. What a great idea. The low start-up cost for online business make it possible for everyone to jump into the bandwagon. Some even use free blogs as a platform, zero operating cost.

So since everybody is doing it, I wonder how do these people differentiate themselves apart from their products, styles and prices. One of the company I found is pretty creative. They are tapping into the celebrity path. What does it mean? Well, the products they carry are not necessarily dirt cheap but they do keep a close lookout to the current trends and hence they carry unique designers' items such as Alberto Makali, Beverly Feldman, Be&D, etc.

In this tough economy, one needs to find a unique niche and be more creative than ever. If not, one will just waste their money and time in things they thought will be a goldmine when they may be just better off doing something else with their life. But then again if you are passionate about something and doing it, then, life will be more worthwhile.

Happy shopping and selling, people. :-)

A Cuppa For You

One of my plurk buddy from Outback, Australia - Peter "Dingobarbie" Willowtree has just gave me a cuppa coffee and I'd like to share it with everyone since the coffee looks like me (especially with the two front teeth. it just needs glasses to complete the DD look). So, here you go. Hope you'll have a great day ahead and enjoy the monkey coffee.

Eyé àdaba

There are singers who have great hype.
There are singers who have great fame.
Then, there are those rare ones who have no hype nor tremendous fame, but what they have is a sincere voice with soulful message.
This time I found it through Aşa, Paris-born Nigerian singer-songwriter.
Even though I don't understand the lyrics of the song - Eyé àdaba, but it just seems to speak to me.

I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Below there's the lyrics and translation too. What a beautiful song about peace.

If you are unable to view the video as you are subscribing to my email newsletter, do visit the following link to listen to the song.

Lyrics:
Eyé àdaba
by Aşa

Oju mo ti mo
Oju mo ti mo mi
Ni le yi o o
Oju mo ti mo - mo ri re o

Eye adaba
Eye adaba
ye adaba ti n fo lo ke lo ke
Wa ba le mi o o
Oju mo ti mo mo ri re o

Translation:
I wake up at dawn
As it dawn’s upon me
I wake up to the sun
Shining upon me

I see doves in the sky
Birds flying high
Then in silence
I pray for peace
For my people

The Old Indonesian Textbooks

Ever wondered how the textbooks look like for some of the Indonesian students in the 80s? Think most of them are for Primary schools. Someone found some of these here I am sharing them. Geez, they are sooooo old!

Bahasa Indonesia = The official language of Indonesia

You will learn phrases such as:
- Ini bapak Budi. = This is Budi's father
- Ini ibu Budi. = This is Budi's mother

Matematika = Mathematics

Pendidikan Moral Pancasila = Erm ... The moral education of Pancasila (The Indonesian State Philosophy)

One of the thing I remember learning was in a multiple choice question:
If you found a wallet on the street you should:
a. Keep it to yourself
b. Return the wallet and keep the money
c. Bring it to the police station

Now, I do wonder which one will people really practice nowadays. :D

Ilmu Pengetahuan Social = The Social Education

I can't really remember what I've learnt here. OMG ... I do remember a bit of geography in it. Erm .... never mind ...

The next one, I knew it as Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam = The Education of Nature (Biology)

I don't really have comments on this. Guess we'll learn that chicken lays eggs and humans don't from here.

Zat dan Energi = Minerals and Energy

I don't remember studying this book. That's how old this book is!

So, do you remember how your text books look like and what have you learned from it?

PS. Thank you, Panci! :D

Little Gordon

I think the following videos are brilliant in conveying its message by creating a parody towards one of the most famous chef in the UK (or may be the world) - Gordon Ramsay. I hope Big Gordon is as entertained by them.

Les Champs-Élysées

This following French song - Les Champs-Elysees will always remind me of my very first French teacher - Linda Hung. Not only it's my ringing tone but it's a basic song where you can really pick up a lot of words and not to mention, if you've never gone to Paris (like me), will make you dream about it more. I hope you'll enjoy it and as I'm going to share it with fellow classmates, I'll paste the meaning below too. :D Enjoy!

Les Champs-Élysées
by Joe Dassin

Je m'baladais sur l'avenue le coeur ouvert à l'inconnu /
I trotted on the avenue my heart opened to the unknowns
J'avais envie de dire bonjour à n'importe qui /
I wanted to say hello to no matter whom
N'importe qui et ce fut toi, je t'ai dit n'importe quoi / No matter whom, it could be you, I'd said anything to you
Il suffisait de te parler, pour t'apprivoiser /
It was enough to speak to you, just to calm down.

Aux Champs-Elysées, aux Champs-Elysées / At Champs-Élysées, At Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie, à midi ou à minuit /
In the sun, under the rain, in midday or midnight
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez aux Champs-Elysées /
That's all you'd ever want at Champs-Élysées

Tu m'as dit "J'ai rendez-vous dans un sous-sol avec des fous /
You said to me "I was pinned in a basement with fools
Qui vivent la guitare à la main, du soir au matin" / Who live guitar-in-hand from dusk till dawn"
Alors je t'ai accompagnée, on a chanté, on a dansé /
Then I accompanied you, one sang, one danced
Et l'on n'a même pas pensé à s'embrasser /
Any one who did not even think of embracing oneself

Aux Champs-Elysées, aux Champs-Elysées / At Champs-Élysées, At Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie, à midi ou à minuit /
In the sun, under the rain, in midday or midnight
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez aux Champs-Elysées /
That's all you'd ever want at Champs-Élysées

Hier soir deux inconnus et ce matin sur l'avenue /
Yesterday evening two unknowns and this morning on the avenue
Deux amoureux tout étourdis par la longue nuit / Two in love all dazed by the long night
Et de l'Étoile à la Concorde, un orchestre à mille cordes /
And to the Star of Concord, form an orchestra with thousand cords
Tous les oiseaux du point du jour chantent l'amour /
All the birds at day-break singing for the love

Aux Champs-Elysées, aux Champs-Elysées / At Champs-Élysées, At Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie, à midi ou à minuit /
In the sun, under the rain, in midday or midnight
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez aux Champs-Elysées /
That's all you'd ever want at Champs-Élysées

Physical, Emotional and Mental Growths

I am not sure how to write this post but I need to. It may be a series of questions or it may just be gibberish but I need to "pen" this down.

There comes a time when I realize and internalize that physical growth doesn't equate to one's emotional and mental growths.

You can be older but not necessarily wiser.
You can be older but not necessarily make you more mature.
You can be older but not necessarily make you take full responsibility of your life.

I am looking back at how I used to act when I was a kid (though I am still pretty much a kid at heart), one common thing I can pull is that I always blame everything and everybody else but me. Nowadays I tend to look at myself first before I point fingers to others though if the PMS period is lurking around the corner, someone may just need to bite the bullet once in a while. For that I sincerely apologize. I do know when I am wrong even if it needs to be told, I will eventually know and admit I am wrong.

But I realize, not everybody's mental and emotional growth are growing at the same rate as their wrinkles. It's a surprising fact but some acts are so amusing that I can't help but be so awed by them. Even though it is supposed to get on my nerves but I can't help to smile as it resembles a kid whose toy was being taken away and trying all ways and acts to gain the attention from others.

Anyway, enough of me blabbering. I just hope everybody has a more balanced and stronger growth in all areas of your life.
