Love Yourself First - Why Should You?

Try saying to yourself this statement - "I love myself and I put myself first."
How does it make you feel?

More often than not, if you are not used to this concept, it will bring some shiver down your spine. You will not be at ease in saying that statement and it totally doesn't feel natural. Some people think by saying that, you are automatically a selfish and egoistic person. I used to think that way too but now, I beg to differ.

I really wonder how majority of us are being brought to believe that it is selfish to love ourselves. I wouldn't know many of your stories but I have my own life to look at.

In a traditional Chinese or I believe Asian family, we are so accustomed to put everyone first but ourselves. We have to put our elders first; these include our parents, our elder brothers/sisters, our grandparents, our aunties, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, friends' parents, parent's friends, etc and the list goes on. As long as these people are in front of you, you are taking the second chair.

You have to show "respect" by making sure the people who are older than you are taken care of first. Hence, it's very common in the Asian family, the eldest in the family always take on the most responsibility, especially in the olden days and especially if you are a male. Many have sacrificed their own studies to go out and work early in their lives so that they are able to support their siblings. This trait is really admirable and pretty much rare to be seen in where I'm living now.

I too learned from my school and church that I have to serve. So, we serve for the sake of serving. I served for the sake of "this is how it is supposed to be". I served relentlessly on a weekly basis, if I could. But, there's this fake façade I found in people that at that point of time I couldn't pinpoint what it was. But it didn't feel "real". It felt like some people were there "serving" for a different purpose.

Don't get me wrong! I think ultimately, all our life purpose is not for ourselves, we have our own calling, believe it or not. You don't need to be Oprah or Jesus to have a calling. Your calling may just be for your family or friends and still that's a worthy calling. However, from my own personal experience, serving, giving and everything are so much more fulfilling when I have first to learn how to serve/give/love myself.

Loving yourself, is not a selfish act at all. It's actually the other way round.

Imagine if you are a car, your purpose is to be driven and to bring your passengers from point A to point B. Well, I don't drive well and I don't know the mechanics of a car but I do know one of the most important component without which you just can't go here go there is - you need the fuel.

To love yourself first, is like to put a full tank in your car to ensure your passengers have a good ride to their destination. To love yourself first, means to be the best that you can be so that you can give the best of yourself to others. How is that a selfish act? It is not only a win-win situation, because when your tank is full, you are happy. When you help others when you are happy, others are happy too.

I come a really long way in learning how to love myself. 14 years to be exact and I briefly mentioned how I came to realize that in previous post of mine where I talked about my parents. Since, I have been on both sides now (quoting Joni Mitchell's awesome song), I realize I am a better person after my tank is full. Not only I am happier, but others feel better when they are with me. How can they not be? My tank is full, I can bring them here and there to their destinations. Though sometimes my car will breakdown, but after putting myself at rest into a imaginary service center - as long as the fuel is intact, I'm good to go again.

Now, when I look back at all the values I have learned from being in a traditional Chinese family, being from school, from church I used to attend, I can now appreciate them even more. When I do give my respect to my elders, it comes from the utmost sincere place. I respect you because I want to and not because I need to and not because it's customary and tradition to do so. When I do good and serve others, it's not because I have to and not because I need to follow a certain doctrine to prove my worthiness, but because I love to and I genuinely will do it without anybody instructs me to do so.

Loving myself first, is one of the best thing that has ever happened to me. It was a long and winding road but I have arrived, and here/now is better than there/then.

So, love yourself first, why should you?

Because before it's too late for you to realize, you are the only being who has accompanied you at your birth. You are the only person who has made all the choices in life that brought you where you are now. You are the only person who is still standing when others have left. You are the only person who cried yourself to sleep and still woke up the next morning and live your life as it is. You will be the one and only person who take that final breath as you part with this amazing journey called life. Why shouldn't you love yourself when ultimately, you are all that you really have?

The most meaningful lesson I learned from being at death’s door is that unless I love myself, nothing else in my life can function at its best. The amount of depth, meaning, and joy I experience in my life is in direct proportion to how much love I have for myself. The amount of love, kindness, patience I have for others is also directly proportional to how much love, patience and kindness I have for myself, because we cannot give others what we ourselves do not have. - Anita Moorjani

If I Can Only

If I can only speak two words
Let them be "Thank You"
To all the souls who have taught me how to live

If I can only move one part of my face
Let them be my lips
To smile upon the blessings which have chanced upon me

If I can only give one thing
Let them be my question
To realize that answers are there all along

If I can only feel one emotion
Let them be love
To let me know that all is supreme

Donna, What About Your Purpose in Life?

Recently, I posted something stupid on my facebook? Eh hold on -_-" I posted my previous blog post on my facebook. That's not too silly, isn't it? Anyway, I posted it and a friend of mine who had a great memory of my "silly questions" asked me,"What about your purpose in life?"

I used to "irritate" most of my close friends with the question - What is your purpose in life? If money is not a problem, what would you do? They will give me a stare, pondered a little then answer. This friend of mine, however, was in a same boat as me. We are both still searching, I guess. The conversation went something like this:

DD: What is your purpose in life?
My funny friend: Don't know yet.
(Few days later)
My funny friend: I know how you can know your purpose in life already.
DD: Really? How?
My funny friend: Google it!
DD: -__________________________________-"

Though I almost fell of my chair when I read that, I did google it! Haha. I found Steve Pavlina's article is insightful as usual. I didn't read it. But the tab has always been open on my browser ever since and I continued living my life.

Can't believe one month has passed since then and apparently, I have not been losing sleep thinking about my purpose in life. I was too busy living my life. Literally. (Though some of my close friends don't agree with this statement.)

Believe it or not, I have one of the best 1 month ever. I have many new friends, many new experiences, connected with many old friends and even went to Beer Fest with one though we haven't met since university time, signed up to a new course, loving French even more, etc. For the first time I remember how it feels to truly live and breathe again. 90% of my breathing and non-sleeping moment, I feel alive. I feel grateful and blessed in every way.

Did anything change? Hmm ... not really but if I have to pinpoint on two things:
- I am more grateful with what I have
- I keep asking questions even though answers may not come immediately

You see, I still don't know what my purpose in life. And shitty events still pop out of no where. At times I could just flaunt my "French" in Hokkien that I didn't even accompany it with
"pardon my _______" to end the sentence. But one of the question I used to ask, I know how to answer it now. That feels really good. That makes a difference.

Question:
If money is not a problem, what would you do?

Answer:
If money is in abundance, I will spend as much quality time as possible with my friends. As I am someone who loves 1-to-1 interaction with people, that's when the quality of the conversation heightened, I will meet 2-3 different people a day and have a super quality time with them. I will travel if I need to and do this 5x a week. The last 2 days of the way, I reserve it for myself and my family.

I will learn from my friends and listen attentively as each words they say may be the next wisdom yet to be discovered. But I do have friends that function well as a group, we will go to a country of our dream and simply have a great "bitching with quality" time.

If money is not a problem, I would really love to visit the following countries on a regular basis just because my friends who live there easily triumph all the monuments that has ever been built.
- USA
- France
- Germany
- Belgium
- Switzerland
- UK
- Australia
- Canada
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- China
- Hong Kong

However, back to my friend's question - Donna,
What about your purpose in life?
My answer to her was,"Still googling."

When I know it, my friend, my mouth that moves like that of goldfish, will definitely tell you about it. Meanwhile, I am going to choose to breathe as one wise man used to say:

"Choose to inhale; do not breathe simply to exist. That's not always easy but it is always worthy." - Final sentences of Mattie Stepanek on his dying bed.

I Can't Answer It, Can You?

Urgh!

Since my verbal constipation has ended, I am on the roll! But if the other 2 regular visitors come - laziness and procrastination, my roll may be disturbed again. Oops. But since they are not here, I'd better move quick.

Anyway, I have been asking myself this one question on regular basis since the longest time. But I still can't answer it. I then thought I could steal some answers from others by asking them the same question. Alas, their answers are simply not mine. It doesn't click at all. Back to square zero I go.

The question is:
If money is not a problem, what would you do now?

This question supposedly able to unlock your passion, purpose, motivation, etc. But I can't answer it.

Most say they will travel around the world. I try to inject myself into that scenario. But I'm not the traveling type. I don't need to see the entire world to realize life is already perfect where I am. Seriously. If I ever need to travel, it's not the place that gives meaning to the journey. But the people and the experiences are the ones that make a place comes alive.

Some say they will do some kind of business; dog cafe, new clothing line, etc. That makes sense. Ventures need cash. At least they know what they love and simply need some funds to fuel them further. Good for them.

Me, nothing is clear yet. If I have the money, what will I do daily? For sure I will visit my parents more often. But as for activities that give meaning to my life, I am still not sure. Guess for now, I will accept that and hopefully, things will be clearer as I move forward.

I Have A Homework ... URGH!

I was chatting with my friend that I may be going through a quarter-life crisis in a joking manner. How would I know I'll be swamped with a homework this weekend? .... :|
Well, he's a coach, I'd better take his homework seriously or else I'll be !@#!@#!@# .... T.T
What's the homework?
It starts with listing down 500 things that are good about me!!
Yes!! It's not 10 or 20 but
500.

How am I going to come up with so many???? He said I can ask my friends about it and if my friends have an opinion, I can not disagree!! GEEZ!!! WHAT??? :| Before I'm being "verbally abused" in the positive manners by others, I shall "abuse" myself first. Argh ... homework ...

Thank you, you-know-who-you-are! -.-"

When Everything is Stripped Away …

Image courtesy of Creative Alley Productions.

I just watched the most interesting episode of Cold Case ever - The Road aired on 6th April 2008. It’s so thought provoking that I can’t help to blog about it.

For those of you who are not familiar about this TV show, Cold Case is about a team of law enforcers who focuses on cases that are unsolved (and hence it’s given the term “cold”). Based on current leads and clues, they’ll try to reopen the case and by any means, solving it.

The latest episode is about a woman, Brenda, who was found missing (and believed was dead based on the evidence found) on the day of her engagement party. You can’t describe how devastated her fiancé was. What other state of mind can he be in anyway? After almost a year, he still couldn’t move on.

Then, they found the suspect and their purpose is hopefully to recover the body of Brenda. So, 2 police officers were trying their best in interrogating him in the hope to find more clues to find where Brenda’s body will be.

What I enjoy the most from the “interrogation” part is that the suspect was proposing such thought provoking questions that were even able to shake up the detectives' minds. Some questions make them think and reflect about their own lives, some agitated one of the detective to actually be more physical towards the suspect.

Anyway, to sum up the story (BEWARE, spoilers ahead), the villain is a home-video editor. He’s one of the best employees any company has ever had. He has been selecting his victims based on the home-videos he edited. The common thread that he chose from the victims is when he spotted that the victim had one thing to live for . For example, there's a choir girl whose life purpose is to serve God. Then there's a mother who adores her new-born daughter so much. And Brenda, who loved her fiancé so much that she proposed to him instead.

They all live for something, and the question that the villain asked that was really important was - what keeps you going? What makes you get off your bed every morning? When everything is stripped away, when what matters most of you are taken away from you, who will you be? Will you give up on life?

That's what he's curious about from all of his victims. There's not once he laid hands to his victims, he just locked all of them in a "dungeon" and observe how long they take to give up when everything is stripped away. He mentioned, the choir girl was the first one to give up on her life after wondering how can God did such cruel thing upon her and why God left her and didn't even exist in that dungeon.

How about the mother, you think? She had the passion to live especially when the villain was playing the video of her new-born baby again and again but when the monitor was taken away from her, that's when she lost it. She gave up on life completely. Even though the door was easily opened if she tried and he (the villain) will not even do anything to them, none of these girls bothered to try to "live" and escape anymore. How interesting can that be?

This episode really makes me think, what am I living for? "I don't know"

When everything is really stripped away from me ... will I give up on life? "I don't know"

Who am I beneath the job I'm holding, the possessions I'm having and the knowledge I'm acquiring? "I don't know"

But for sure, I believe anybody who's reading this are more than what you think you are. You are not your job. You are not your spouse. You are not your religion. You are not you family. You are not your mom. You are not your dad. You are not your siblings. You are not what you eat. You are not what other people say about you. You are not your career. You are not your car. You are not your house. You are not your knowledge. You are not your aspirations. You are not your wealth. You are not your bank account. You are not your fashion statement. You are not the people you are hanging out with. You are not where you live. You are not what you say. You are not your opinion. You are not ________ .... and ultimately, you are not any labels you or other people are imposing on you.

You are more than that.

When everything is stripped away and you realize you are not giving up on life yet, that's when you know you are bigger than life itself.

Questions & Actions: Rules or No Rules

Sharing something that I've just read ... I've not been able to answer these questions too. How about you?
  1. How has being "realistic" or "responsible" kept you from the life you want?
  2. How has doing what you "should" resulted in subpar experiences or regret for not having done something else?
  3. Look at what you're currently doing and ask yourself,"What would happen if I did the opposite of the people around me? What will I sacrifice if I continue on this track for 5, 10, or 20 years?
