Jennifer Hudson

Yay ... she won the Oscar. So happy for her ... whether her acting deserves an Oscar or not, I can't be the judge and I don't think anyone can. I must be honest secretly I'm hoping little Abigail Breslin would win though. Little Miss Sunshine has left deeper imprint than
Dreamgirls but well, I was not in the panel of judges for Oscar, so, great job, Jennifer.

What impressed me most was ... bringing myself back watching her on American Idol. Just simply by hearing her voice gave me some chills. That voice was so unforgettable, though deep inside I knew then it was quite impossible for her to win American Idol ... but who can resist such voice?

Apparently, Dreamgirls producer or even the casting director must have had the same feeling too ... hence out of hundreds of applicants (including Fantasia, so I heard). When I watched the movie, honestly I was confused who's the lead actress in the show? I thought it's Jennifer Hudson. Her acting and singing talents have overshadowed Beyonce's so much that after watching the movie, I only remember Hudson. And it seems like I was listening to great divas of old time like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, etc ... time was really turned back when I heard her opened up her mouth.

What can I learn from her? Guess
Jennifer Hudson is the real Dream Girl. In her we see that dreams do come true in the most miraculous way possible. She was an American Idol reject ... has no experience in acting and yet she won the Golden Globe & now ... Academy Awards!!! If that's not some kind of miracle despite all the nasty words some people give .. then I have no idea what it is anymore.

I love what she said to Chicago Tribune -
"I haven't changed," she said. "My life has." We'll see how her life will evolve further after this. :) Must be an interesting journey for her.

How Does One Make Friends?

There are so many online dating sites available if you happen to surf around. I happened to bump into www.justsayhi.com. Though I'm not really a fan of such sites and they are not even the top 5 on Google search but what sets this company apart is that their domain name - Just Say Hi - has said it all. Simple and to the point to its industry.

People keep wondering why some people have more friends than others. The answer in simply how many "
Just Say Hi" activities have you performed? This not-so-out-of-reach wisdom is so easy and yet at the current situation, you find it difficult to say hi to strangers eh ...

But when it comes to online, it may be a whole new game. With Myspace and Friendster mushrooming, you have no excuse to have not enough friends in this world. The world is flat and it will become flatter and flatter. The next thing you know, you'll find your bestest friend is not the one that's reachable by your hands. They may be continents apart but really close to heart.

Desu nôto (Death Note)

I know I'm a bit too late in watching this show but it's still worth every second of it.

Super Short Synopsis

What if you have a "Death Note" that whose name written on it will be dead. Will you do good? Will you be appreciated? Will things get worse? Find out in Death Note. The intelligent strategies between black and white were just amazing.

D.D.'s A-HA Moments

The Death God or Shinigami portrayed in this show is really one of my favorite character. Though his look is quite scary at first but after you got to know him ... you'll realize he's a nice heart too :p ... And he's healthy ... eats only apple. Cute. What do I get from here is that at times we tend to put the blame so much on the devils that we forget may be we humans are the real devil in this world and create so much sufferings and turmoil. Anyway ... just my own A-Ha. Not here to debate with any religions or beliefs. Life is too short for debating such stuff.

Video

Can you believe it that you can watch the whole video online? You better believe it ...

Authenticity

It's been quite a while ya ... since I blogged ...

Tons of contents to be used but yet the holiday mood just sank in to me ... I'd better wake up asap.

Anyway, grabbed the latest copy of O Magazine (yeah ... I only flipped through it and never really read it ... and I really need to remind myself I'm just not a magazine reader!!!) ... and found the theme for this month is very interesting.

Authenticity

They have a checklist that you can put in front of your mirror that says:

Identity Check
Hair? Combed.
Lipstic? Still on.
True self? Hello?

It's funny how we always remember to put on all the exterior things but forget that the most important thing of all is to put on our true self.

I wonder whether I've had mine on today ...

"To let oneself be carried on passively is unthinkable." - Virginia Woolf

"Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be, because sooner or later, if you are posing, you will forget the pose, and then where are you?" - Fanny Brice

"One of the greatest feelings in life is the conviction that you have lived the life you wanted to live - with the rough and the smooth, the good and the bad - but yours, shaped by your own choices, and not someone else's." - Michael Ignatieff

So, I'm sorry if any of you are waiting for exciting contents cause I don't really have at the moment :( ... Hope the energizer bunny will come to the rescue soon.

The Apprentice - What Do You Learn?

I'm quite a big fan of The Apprentice since the day it started. And just recently, my friend asked me what do I learn from it and she's curious about it since I followed it almost every week. So, I said I'll put my learnings in to my blog. :p ... It gives me ample time to think and formulate what actually I've learned from that show I've spent 1 hour of every week of my life.

Well, The Apprentice has only reached the 5th season here in Singapore but I'm glad MediaCorp is airing it and let everyone has the chance to be entertained and learn the glimpse of business world ala Mr. Trump.

So what have I learned out of the 5 seasons so far ... I really feel like saying that it's quite an advantage for being a MAN haha ... but ... I shall refrain from saying that. (How can I dismiss the point that 4 out of 5 winners are male?)

Anyway, here's what I've learned:
  1. When you lose the balance between emotion and logic, you'll tend to go haywire. That's been proven from so many episodes especially when there were women involved. It's so painful to watch their own ego and pride working forgetting they have important tasks at hand.
  2. Choosing the right team member when you have the chance is really crucial. Now it's the final episode in Singapore I seriously amused by the Lee's selection of his team members. Let's see how he'll pull off all his tasks. For Sean, he's really spot-on his choices. I mean, Tammy is for the obvious reason :p ... And Andrea just caught my attention since the beginning. Though she may appear stubborn at times but never once I saw her raised up her voice to others even though she's in the board room. Calm and poised lady. No wonder at the age of 31 she's already a self-made multi millionaire. :)
  3. Think out of the box. Think big! So many of the tasks won are by the members who thought big. Instead of selling at $1 to 100 people, how to sell $10 to 10 people may work better. Of course, provided you get the deal done and not just mere talk talk talk talk.
  4. And my favourite of all, drawn from Mr. Trump. Marketing, Marketing, Marketing! The Apprentice is not just a TV show to entertain and to learn, but it's a media to market his lines of businesses. So ... one stone ... few birds. Now, I'm stuck with his Trump Ice, Trump Tower, Trump Cologne, Mar-A-Lago Club, Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Books, and many many many many more to come. Haha.

Erin Tierney Kramp

Imagine:
You are in your early 30s.
You are happily married to a wonderful husband.
You have one young beautiful daughter.
Then ....
You are diagnosed with cancer.
You know you may be dead before your daughter grows up.

What would you have done?

Meet, Erin Tierney Kramp, she's the woman that was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 33 in 1994. At that time, her daughter, Peyton was only few years old.

What do you think she's done?

Well, for sure she fought her cancer like mad. She flew all over the country to seek for best advices. She even studied alternative treatments and even unproved methods. She fought hard.

Unfortunately, even though she fought hard and adopted the attitude of never ever to give up, she lost the battle 31st October 1998 - 4AM. Yep ... she died. :( ....

But, what makes her story so special until Oprah has included her as one of the people who left "heartprint" for what she's done before she died.

As a mother who knows her time was almost up, with so much to share with the daughter she loved, she started to create tons of videos for her daughter to watch when she's no longer exist physically in this world. You'll be surprised on what are the tapes consist of. They consist of almost everything Peyton (Erin's daughter) needs for the rest of her life until her wedding day.

To mention a few there are:
  • How to choose make up
  • How to choose a husband
  • How to prepare when daddy's remarried
  • How to pick a career: "When you're picking your career don't pick what you think I would want you to do. Don't pick what you know would make Dad happy for you to pick. I want you to pick something, whether you're schooled in it or not, that you have passion for." - My mom never told me that ler!! -.- Still love you lar, mom :p
  • And many more
Do you think she stopped there? Nope. She even prepared every birthday gifts for Peyton (nicely wrapped) and also ... wedding gift! It's like she's there for Peyton all the time especially the big events. As for the minor events ... Peyton can always refer to all the videos for answer. Her mummy will always be answering her.

You see ... death has always been such a taboo topic among most of my peers. And most of them live in a way that nobody around them is gonna die but they all will, including your beloved parents and even my beloved Kiky whom I thought will live forever (naive!) ... but she also has left me first. And to this moment I'll cringe thinking about it.

But that's just life. Things will go. They will end. It's what you do with it when they haven't ended yet that makes all the difference. Do you live a legacy or do you simply live deadly? It's up to you. Are you in denial or you face the facts and make the most of it?

Erin's struggle for cancer has reached out so many souls out there. If you simply Google her name "Erin Kramp", you'll find other blog entries, written by people who are so touched by what she's done and you'll also find The Erin Tierney Kramp Encouragement Scholarship Program. She has also wrote a book titled Living with the End in Mind; A Practical Checklist for Living Life to the Fullest by Embracing Your Mortality.

Thank you, Erin for your courage and the lessons you live behind. Your loving acts to Peyton has reached to the world and touched many lives. :) and hope your message will be heard by many souls who tend to forget that "death" is a sure thing and life is what you create it to be.

Hong Kong - Food & Shopping (1/9/07)

After the glorious food day (1/8/07), the next day we planned to go to Ngong Ping 360.

Image courtesy of Hong Kong Family Fun Guide
(I'll come out with a post of all the necessary guides you need when you are in Hong Kong. :-) ... when? wait ya ...)

But, because yours truly slept like a pig ... we didn't manage to go there (until the end of the trip.... la la la la). Yeah, I'm a piggy monkey. I know that. :p

So, we ended up hunting for this Vietnamese food that I used to eat long long time ago. (Argh ... I forgot to take their name card :( ... so no address, folks :( .... but I can show you where if you bring me there. Ke ke ke ke ...). We walked for almost 20 minutes, asked lots of people and none of them know ... at the verge of giving up, we found it!!! They have renovated, made the place bigger and oh mi gosh, so many great reviews on the food. We had come to the right place and I've only a piece of the food to share with you.

That's the rice crackers with pork slices on top (was it pork or beef ah ... oh man ... have I told you I can never be a food reviewer?):p .... So, anyway, let's skip this foodie thingie altogether.

After stuffing myself with glorious food, we decided to check out the factory outlets at Tung Chung (the same station we need to go if we go to Ngong Ping 360). The picture above was taken when we needed to walk a lot to reach the interchange. I was so drown in the super bulky winter clothing that I brought. But I have no choice ... me and cold are like "very best friend". So, better to look ugly than be frozen.

So, what's there at Tung Chung? There were the factory outlets for Samsonite, Nike, Adidas, Quiksilver, Timberland, etc ... but it was quite ... boring (for me) ... and we almost went back already until ... my sharp eyes friend saw so many people carrying "Esprit" shopping bag. So we asked the security guard where Esprit was (It was just behind us and it's so bloody big!!!) and we attacked it next.

Oh my .... it's so huge .... and we were there for more than 2 hours!! And still refused to get out!!!! Arghhhhhhhhhh ..... There were so many things ... nice things ... (I don't normally shop for Esprit in Singapore because of the price) but I spent like mad when I reached there ..!!! Why? Quite obvious! It's CHEAP! (oh no ... I start to sound like a chicken ....) but it's realy "cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap". I got a pair of high leather boots for only HKD 495 (SGD 99) ... and I'm not going to bore you with what else I bought but the point is, when you are there please attack any Esprit outlet cause your shopping will be worth it.

Let me tell you a secret ... during my 1 week stay in Hong Kong, I went to 2 Esprit outlets and both times, I shopped a lot! !@#!@#!#!@# :p ...... La la la ...

Enough with the shopping. We were so late for the dinner. My friend's dad was cooking that night and we were late! (Because of Esprit! haha) ...

When we reached home, we were greeted by 3 fresh (LIVE) fish which minutes later, they were steamed ... and as much as I HATE steamed fish since young, I LOVE this one! It's amazing (too bad I don't have the photos for it as it was totally in a mess after I decided to take photo of it).

But luckily, I still have the photo of the other great dish that my friend's dad cook. It's long bean with egg. Do you know for appetizer, my friend ate 4 bowl of this????? Thank you uncle for your great time and great great yummy dishes which are 10x better than those I ate outside :-) .... My tummy was so delighted and tomorrow I needed to have more energy ... as I was going to attack Ocean Park!!! ;p .... See ya ....

Jacqui Saburido

I believe some of you must have seen these few images through some forwarded emails. I have too but ... watching her spoke in Oprah, has created different experience and left an imprint that will be with me to the graveyard. (If I decide to be buried, that is :p)

Look at these images, they are of the same person ... can you believe it?

Images courtesy of http://health.discovery.com

Who is she?

She is Jacqui Saburido. Pretty, isn't she? So, why did she become the next image? Are you sure it's not just a mask?

Nope! It's real. I watch it on OPRAH!!!! It pinched my heart so much to see the disaster that has occurred to her. It's like ... why her? What has she done wrong???

As you can see from her main website - www.helpjacqui.com, she was taking a break from college and decided to come to USA from Venezuela to study English (she spoke fine English now, BTW), then everything changes when a drunk driver crashed into the car she was in on the 19th of September 1999.

When the police found her, she was on fire and her body was 60% burned. No one ever thought she'll survive. One of the policeman actually hoped that God will just end her suffering there and then as she was wailing in pain beyond human voices. But, I think the
One above has totally different plan for her.

Do you think her suffering ended there? Haiz ... how I wish ... seriously :( .... But since then she has undergone more than 50 operations and there are more to come. And it is not only financially, physically painfully but also mentally and emotionally. Even changing her clothes in the morning (activity we tend to take for granted), is like a war for her to fight.

Now, I've said enough about her suffering and her anguished. She's lost her face completely beyond recognition and even lost some of her simple dreams like getting married and have normal life. Do you realize I've not talked about the driver who's caused this unto her? Well, Reggie Stephey was a high school student then with promising future ahead and now serving jail terms of 7 years and fined $20,000 (what a small price to pay, right?).

So, what's the lesson we need to learn here? It's very obvious that we shouldn't drive when you are intoxicated with alcohol. NO!!! It's not just your life, selfish soul, it's others too! But ... there's greater lesson for me to be drawn from Jacqui.

In Oprah show, while she was being interviewed, for the first time after so many years, Jacqui met Reggie's mother. Let me tell you ... Reggie's mom could hardly say any word. She herself was so devastated and she told Oprah,"I don't think I can do this." And Oprah kept saying,"You can do this." for quite a few times. What's amazing was Jacqui stood up, with her totally deformed hands and arms, she hugged Reggie's mom and said,"It's okay. It's okay." Oh my ............................ As I'm typing this my heart can just cringe thinking about her act of selflessness and utmost forgiveness towards what's most of us deem as misfortune, she took the simple act and showed compassion towards the person whom most of us think should be mocked.

So, who's Jacqui Saburido?

She's an angel without wings. Period.

I hope when you think that your life sucks, think about being totally immersed in the fire in pain, think about losing one of your eyes, your skin, your face, and everything that you used to identify it as yourself, think about losing the dreams you've once had, think about the struggle you need to go through the simple things in life that you used to take for granted ... think about Jacqui Saburido and be grateful of what life has offered you so far and reach out to those who may be the next victim or next Reggie ...

And don't forget .... to remember the message below .... because this world has never been created just for you alone.

Thank you my friend for giving me the greatest gift of all. :-) You've given me so much more inspiration to blog! :-) Thank you ....

Updates:
Oh mi gosh .... I found her videos on Youtube!!! Please get her message, folks!

Dream Academy Presents Multiple Personalities Disorder

Image courtesy of The Dream Academy Productions - www.dreamacademy.com.sg

Q: What's better than being a potato couch on Sunday evening?

A: Watching a great quality local production by local talents with great price and great sore throat due to the never ending laughters :-)

The Dream Academy Productions proudly presents "Multiple Personalities Disorder" starring one of the most talented actor in Singapore - Hossan Leong.

In the 1.5 hour (without any resting time), he has "suffered" more than 10 personalities starting from Ricky Martini, Julio the Sexual English Teacher, Share, Whitney Whoseturn, Kenny Rogered, Barry Moneylow, and even ... the most unexpected 6 Million Rupiah Man. So, what's all about?

It's parody about this civil servant name "Ng Wai Kum" (Don't ask me why his name is like that ya ...) who had a very important task - to attract foreign talent to Singapore and make them stay and contribute to the economy. So, his quests made him discovered so many interesting comments from the "foreign talents" such as:
  • James Bonded doesn't know that he needs to renew his license to kill even though he's not killing, if not he'll be fined.
  • Merlion (Singapore's trademark symbol. Mermaid body with Lion head) has sent a confused sign to some of the foreign talents as whether he should swim or crawl for his mode of transportation.
  • One of the guest even promised to give all the domestic workers 2 parachutes just in case they fell down while cleaning the windows. (alamak ....)
  • And the most hillarious and my favourite when "Richard Semens" was teaching his customised exercise for fellow Singaporeans who would like to get involved in the meet and greet with fellow citizens. One of the exercise is used when meeting any smelly hawkers, so the "shake hand and look away" will come in handy.
The reason I'm making the time to write about it right after I'm watching it because the show has just been extended due to popular demand until 10th Feb 2007. You can book it from Sistic. You really gotta check it out when you can. (I even met my boss there :p ...)

D.D.'s Ratings
9.99 out of 10 Diamonds
It's original.
It's super funny.
It's down to earth.
It's simply awesome!

So where does the 0.01 go? Well ... I just wish the show can be longer ... 1.5 hours really not enough larrrrrrrrrrr.

Selena!!! I want moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :-)

Great job, guys! :-)

Movie: Miss Potter

I've no idea why I had the urge to watch Miss Potter alone. So I did and it's been great. :-)

Super Short Synopsis

Why is the title called Miss Potter and not Beatrix Potter (her full name)? There's a reason behind it. In that era, when women above 30s are still single, when they were being called "Miss", it's actually pretty sarcastic remark
Beatrix Potter? She's actually a famous author a quite a lot of children books especially The Tale of Peter Rabbit and many many more which I'll be sharing later.

This movie is about her career, her love life, her passion and most importantly her purpose in life and how she's lived her life without knowing what to do next and yet still go through it with open minds all the time. Though she's brought up in a very well-to-do family, but her perseverance to beat the odds and follow her own path was very strong and in the it bedazzled not only people around her but the world through her paintings and story telling skills. You should watch more to find out how. :-)

D.D.'s A-HA Moments

  1. Miss Potter started and ended the movie with the following quote,"There's something quite delicious about writing the first words of a story." Why? Because the way she lived her life was always in the moment and most importantly, living it in her own imaginative ways. Though there were so many tough times too, she still held on to her passion and imaginations no matter how ridiculous they may seem. And in the end, she has created something greater than her parents could have ever imagined for a girl who only knew how to draw animals.
  2. She could stay with her parents and be pampered till the day she died but she chose to take control of her own life, moved to a countryside, bought her own farm house with no maids around and be totally independent be it emotionally, mentally and financially. How? By drawing and telling stories. Something she has done best since she was a little girl.
  3. With the money she earned from royalties, she finally found a purpose that's greater than life itself. She regularly bid for farmland and preserved it from greedy developers who wanted to steal away those source of inspirations through breath taking views of the nature. For more than 8 years, she had acquired around 4000 acres of farmland and preserved them from nature's vultures.
  4. Even though things didn't go as her wishes, she didn't blame anyone for it. Not even those that we, as viewers, think should be blamed. She took the full responsibility, dusted off herself and moved on. Amazing attitude.
  5. When you believe in yourself so much, the universe will send someone who believes in you as much as you do. And together you'll discover a journey that you'll never imagine even though it may seem absurd at first.
  6. Lastly, doing something you love and good at, can never fail you. Guess almost all great stories have this lesson. :)
